After SPM or its equivalent, most students in Malaysia pass through a pre-university stage before their degree. The four common routes are foundation, diploma, matriculation and international qualifications such as A-Level. Each suits a different kind of student.
Foundation programmes
A foundation is a one-year bridge, usually run by a specific university and tied to particular degree clusters — business, science, engineering, and so on. It is quick and focused, which is ideal if you are already confident about your field and your university.

Diploma programmes

Matriculation and STPM
Government matriculation and STPM are respected, affordable routes, particularly for public university entry. They are academically demanding and follow a fixed national curriculum, rewarding students who thrive under structured examination.
International qualifications (A-Level, AUSMAT, IB)
These globally recognised pre-university programmes keep the most doors open, including overseas study. A-Level is exam-focused, AUSMAT blends coursework and finals, and the IB is broad and holistic. They cost more but offer maximum flexibility.
